Scientists from Plekhanov Russian University of Economics together with leading medical centers in Russia creating a self-learning AI to support medical decision-making
The developments cover the diagnostics of mental and neurological disorders, epileptology, ophthalmology, mammology, and disaster medicine – and are already showing accuracy of up to 92%. The research is conducted, among others, within the framework of the UNESCO Chair “Social, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of the Knowledge Societies” and aligns with UNESCO’s current global agenda on the responsible use of artificial intelligence, especially in the field of education.
The developments cover the diagnostics of mental and neurological disorders, epileptology, ophthalmology, mammology, and disaster medicine – and are already showing accuracy of up to 92%. The research is conducted, among others, within the framework of the UNESCO Chair “Social, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of the Knowledge Societies” and aligns with UNESCO’s current global agenda on the responsible use of artificial intelligence, especially in the field of education.
Director of the Research Institute of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Digital Solutions, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Khramov presented three key areas. The first is psychoneurology: an AI platform based on hypergraph neural networks and algebraic topology uses MRI to detect brain connectivity disruptions invisible to classical methods. Early diagnostic subsystems operate on this core. The second area is systems for epileptology: rapid diagnosis within 15 minutes with a sensitivity of about 90%. The third is an intelligent assistant for disaster medicine based on a multi-agent AI system.
“The systems being developed do not replace the doctor but provide an objective ‘second opinion,’ especially in situations where the cost of error is particularly high,” stressed Alexander Khramov.
Projects in ophthalmology and mammology were presented by Sergey Yarushev, Director of the Scientific Center for Advanced Research in AI: a prototype system for diagnosing diabetic macular edema that recognizes 9 types of biomarkers is being created jointly with the Pirogov Center, and a system for diagnosing contrast-enhanced mammography – including Russia’s first tool for generating datasets according to the BI-RADS system – is being developed with the A.S. Loginov Moscow Clinical Scientific Center. Leading Researcher Yuri Titov reported on developments aimed at reducing mortality from chronic non-communicable diseases within the framework of active longevity objectives.
Rector of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Chairman of the Coordination Committee of UNESCO Chairs in the Russian Federation, and Head of the UNESCO Chair “Social, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of the Knowledge Societies” Dr. Ivan Lobanov noted that today the university is not only about economics but also about advanced AI research for medicine: “The medical decision support systems created at the university are already being tested in the country’s leading clinical centers. Partnership with the Pirogov Center, the A.S. Loginov Moscow Clinical Scientific Center, and the Federal Center for Disaster Medicine allows us to implement the developments into practice and train a new generation of specialists at the intersection of medicine, artificial intelligence and management.”
