The Baikal International Environmental Congress will be held in Irkutsk on September 24–27, 2026

The Baikal International Environmental Congress serves as a premier global forum for high-level dialogue between the legal, business, political, and law enforcement communities. The Congress addresses critical issues of ecology, the preservation of natural heritage sites, and the advancement of jurisprudence and legislative initiatives. It is a vital platform for fostering partnerships aimed at promoting environmental awareness, implementing cutting-edge technologies, and sharing best practices in environmental protection amidst contemporary global challenges. The Congress is organized with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and is held under the auspices of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO. The event is a collaborative effort between leading academic institutions and regional governments, featuring participation from: ● The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation; ● The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation; ● ANO "National Priorities" and the Agency for Strategic Initiatives; ● Representatives of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies; ● Heads of Specially Protected Natural Areas (SPNAs) and prominent non-governmental organizations. The 2026 Congress marks two significant dates: The 30th Anniversary of Lake Baikal’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the 110th Anniversary of Russia’s protected area (Zapovednik) system. Our mission is to strengthen cooperation between Russian and international stakeholders to preserve natural ecosystems, enhance professional and scientific capacity in environmental management, and cultivate a culture of sustainability among the general public. The Congress features a diverse program involving federal and regional authorities, renowned Russian and international scientists, public figures, and business leaders: 1. National Green Tech Expo. A showcase of modern environmental solutions, innovations, and sustainable development projects. The exhibition highlights Russia’s leading experience in preserving unique natural sites and fosters collaboration between government, science, and industry in the field of the Circular Economy. 2. Baikal Technology Conference. Expert discussions on the main trends and successful practices of acceleration and investment of startup companies. Within the framework of the conference, the final of the competition of "green" startups of the Baikal Research Center will be held with a presentation to potential investors. 3.Scientific conference "Baikal – UNESCO World Heritage Site: 30 years of research, results and prospects". A platform for expert discussion of the problems of preserving the Baikal ecosystem and the development of research in this area, including issues of the current ecological status of Lake Baikal and its coast, the search for ways to develop the Central Ecological Zone, and the improvement of scientific, educational and educational programs in the field of protection of Lake Baikal. 4. III National Research and Practice Conference: "Protection of Nature Reserves and Environmental Security" Organized with the support of the Russian State University of Justice (RSUJ). Key discussion topics include: Legal regulation and enforcement in environmental protection; Environmental monitoring and compliance; Sustainable resource management and professional capacity building. 5. XII International Reforestation Forum: "Lake Baikal Ecosystem 2026" Held traditionally in the vicinity of the Baikal World Heritage site, this forum brings together volunteers from Russia and abroad for hands-on reforestation work and knowledge exchange. 6. V International Youth Environmental Forum: "Eco-Youth 2026" An annual event for students, researchers, and young professionals. It focuses on developing environmental volunteerism and promoting sustainable lifestyles, scientific careers, and environmental professions among the younger generation. Format and Outcomes: The Congress includes thematic conferences, expert panels, and discussion platforms, including field sessions on the shores of Lake Baikal. A comprehensive Book of Proceedings is published following the event, consolidating the research and policy recommendations generated during the sessions.
